Help with Events

Please note: This page has been withdrawn from regular use as the screenshots within it no longer match the precise appearance of the operational system.

There’s a lot of information on this web site about events at the Case. This page provides some pointers on how to make sense of it all. It’s a lengthy read but we hope you find it informative.

Pub events may have their details published on our News pages or as entries in our Event Calendars; many will have both. Events may have regular occurrences or be a one-off. Our What’s On: Regular Events page gives general info about regular events.

Nearly all pub events appear on our Event Calendars; the exception being Craft Group meetings. You won’t be surprised to learn that the Event Calendars are date oriented and the reason Craft Group meetings don’t appear is that they don’t have fixed dates; they are arranged on an ad-hoc basis. Other events are scheduled with fixed dates ahead of time so can be included on the calendars.

All one-off events will have individual news items providing details of the event. Regular events with a bigger draw (eg. Open Mic Nights and Quiz Nights) will also have their own individual news item for each occurrence. Other regular events tend not to.

Events will appear on the calendars first (as soon as a date is confirmed) and then typically appear as a news item a week or two before the event date. News items are also published on our Facebook page. To see such news items ‘pushed’ to your Facebook news feed, please opt to ‘follow’ The Case Is Altered on Facebook.

You can access news items from:

  • the News entry on the main menu at the top of each page (this entry gives access to all types of news, both for events and for general news about the pub),

  • from the Top News list at the bottom of our Home page (which lists up to 5 news headlines) or

  • from the News Headlines list of up to 10 headlines in the system sidebar on most other pages (for example, see the right of this page).

News items are listed in publication date order with the most recent at the top. Once published, news items remain accessible via the main News pages but headlines on the Top News and News Headlines lists are ‘expired’ once they cease to be relevant (eg. after an event they describe has taken place). So if you want to read about an historic event then you’ll find it on the News pages, although you may have to click through lots of older pages to find it as each News page only shows 5 news items per page and we currently have over 400 news items in our system! However if you look in the footer of most pages you’ll find a section entitled Browse Old News (for example, see the bottom of this page). This allows you to select the news items published in a particular month. Simply select the required month from the drop down menu.

Our calendars appear in three different forms across our web site:

  • The ‘main’ calendar is a full page colour display showing one month at a time which is accessible from the site wide menu at the top of each page (under What’s On/ Main Events Calendar) plus additional View Main Calendar buttons across the site.

  • A compact ‘mini’ calendar is located in the sidebar of most pages under an Events Calendar heading – for an example look to the right hand side of this page. Again this shows a month at a time.

  • And for pages which don’t include a sidebar, in an even more compact form, another mini calendar is to be found in the page footer under a This Week’s Events heading, for example see the Home page . This calendar only shows info for the current week.

The main calendar shows the names of all events and is colour coded to indicate the category of an event, eg. blue for music. Click an event for a pop up panel to appear with more info on that event (see Fig 1 for an example). Click each image on this page for a larger view.

The mini calendars adopt a more muted colour scheme than the main calendar – there isn’t space to show a colour coded band and the name for each event in the calendar itself, especially where multiple events occur on the same day (unlike the main calendar), so each event date is always shown in a single colour but in a larger font to distinguish it from non-event days. Click on an event day and a pop up panel will appear with info regarding all the events due that day. This is where the coloured bands found in the main calendar make a re-appearance (see Fig 2 for an example one month mini and Fig 3 for a one week mini).

Clicking the More link in a mini pop up will take you to a Single Event View display (see Fig 4).

Note that on the mini calendars, the current day is always shown in red and other days in black so you can think of it as “today is a red letter day and all event days are big days“. Also a View Main Calendar button is positioned below each mini calendar to offer quick access to the larger display.

For earliest info on possible forthcoming events, please check our calendars. Click the Next button to step forward a month at a time on the main or one month mini calendars. Click on the More links in mini calendar pop ups to visit relevant Single Event Views and click on More event info links wherever they appear to display an associated news item (if there is one) or a relevant section within our What’s On: Regular Events page.
